It´s a sad day for Spartacus fans today, as it has been oficially reported that the former star of the show, Andy Whitfield, passed away on Sunday of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Whitfield´s wife released a statement that reads as follows:
“On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer. He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.”
Whitfield was diagnosed with treatable Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma in early March of 2010. After being declared cancer-free two months later, he was ready to return to work on the show that had been interrupted earlier.
However, in September it was announced that the actor had to leave the original series entirely due to his illness and was substituted by Liam McIntyre as the lead character.
We are deeply saddened by the news and our thoughts are with his family and friends in these difficult times.
